BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Residents across the Southern Tier woke up to a frosty morning Friday, with many valleys dipping into the upper 20s and lower 30s. Despite the chilly start, temperatures are expected to rebound sharply under bright autumn sunshine, reaching the upper 50s to mid-60s by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the coldest pockets early Friday morning included Bath, Corning, and Towanda, where readings briefly touched the upper 20s. The NWS says calm winds and clear skies allowed heat to escape overnight, setting up ideal conditions for frost on lawns, rooftops, and vehicle windshields.
By midday, however, a shift in high pressure will bring a noticeable warm-up, helping to melt any lingering frost quickly. Roads are expected to remain dry and travel conditions good along I-81, I-88, and Route 17 corridors. Outdoor plans for Friday and early this weekend look favorable, though forecasters note another round of cool nights is likely into Sunday morning.
Officials remind residents to continue protecting sensitive plants and outdoor pets overnight through the weekend, as lows are expected to fall near or below freezing again in sheltered valleys. No precipitation is anticipated until early next week.
