Binghamton, N.Y. – Showers are set to linger across much of upstate New York through early Thursday morning, delivering up to an inch of beneficial rainfall and holding temperatures well below normal. Afternoon highs will struggle out of the 60s across the Southern Tier and central counties, nearly 15 degrees cooler than average for mid-August.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, most communities can expect a half-inch to one inch of rain, with some pockets north of Ithaca and east of Syracuse seeing totals closer to 1.5 inches. Cloud cover and the steady drizzle will keep conditions damp for drivers through tonight, with low visibility possible on higher terrain routes such as I-81 near Cortland and Route 17 through the Catskills.

Cities including Binghamton, Ithaca, and Elmira will see the heaviest rain during the evening commute, while lighter showers hold on across Scranton and Monticello into the overnight. With no severe storms in the mix, forecasters note the rain will help ease ongoing dry conditions but urge motorists to allow extra travel time on slick roads.

Rain chances gradually taper off Thursday morning, with improving conditions later in the day.
