BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A sharp cooldown is on the way for Central New York and the Twin Tiers, with frost expected late Thursday night into Friday morning as clear skies and calm winds set the stage for the coldest temperatures of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, daytime highs today will stay in the 50s under partly sunny skies and a light northwest breeze. However, a push of dry Canadian air will drop overnight lows into the upper 20s and lower 30s by early Friday, leading to widespread frost across the Finger Lakes, Wyoming Valley, and Southern Tier.
The NWS urges residents to protect sensitive outdoor plants, cover late-season gardens, and bring potted vegetation indoors. The growing season continues in lower valleys, including Ithaca, Elmira, and Wilkes-Barre, where patchy frost is most likely. Drivers may also find thin frost on windshields early Friday before temperatures rebound into the upper 50s by afternoon.
The cold air mass will linger through Saturday morning before a gradual warming trend begins this weekend. Expect dry conditions with plenty of sunshine through early next week as high pressure builds over the Northeast.
