Binghamton, New York – Strong winds and rain are moving into central New York tonight, bringing travel concerns across the Southern Tier and nearby high terrain as a Wind Advisory takes effect.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, southwest winds will increase this evening, with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph from tonight through late Friday evening. The advisory covers much of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania, including Broome, Tioga, Chenango, Cortland, and Delaware counties. The strongest gusts are expected overnight and again Friday, especially along ridges and higher elevations south of Interstate 90. Gusty winds may blow around unsecured objects, bring down tree limbs, and cause scattered power outages.

Rain develops tonight and may briefly mix with snow Friday as colder air moves in behind a cold front. Any snow accumulation is expected to be minor, but temperatures falling into the 20s by Friday night could create slick spots, particularly on untreated roads and bridges. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use extra caution due to strong crosswinds.

Conditions improve heading into the weekend, with calmer winds and partly sunny skies Saturday. Looking ahead to the holiday, Christmas Eve on Wednesday is shaping up cold but mostly quiet across the Binghamton area, with dry weather favored at this time. While temperatures stay seasonably chilly, no significant hazards are currently expected, and additional updates will be issued if conditions change.
