Binghamton, New York – Strong winds and unseasonably warm temperatures are expected across central New York Friday, bringing the potential for travel impacts and isolated power issues.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, windy conditions will persist through the day, especially across the Finger Lakes and Mohawk Valley regions. Southerly winds are forecast to strengthen as a low-pressure system moves in from the west, with peak wind gusts ranging from 35 to 45 miles per hour in some areas.
Forecasters said unsecured outdoor objects could be blown around, and spotty power outages are possible due to the gusty conditions. Winds are expected to gradually subside later this evening and overnight.
Along with the wind, temperatures are expected to climb well above typical early January levels. High temperatures across the region are forecast to reach the upper 40s to mid-50s, creating a very mild day for this time of year.
Rain showers are also expected to move through the area, with precipitation developing late this morning and continuing through late afternoon. Rainfall amounts are expected to be light, but periods of rain combined with gusty winds may briefly reduce visibility and create slick road conditions.
The National Weather Service indicated that no severe weather is expected, but the combination of wind and rain could still produce localized impacts. Drivers of high-profile vehicles may encounter difficult travel conditions, particularly on exposed roadways.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose items such as trash cans and holiday decorations and to remain cautious around trees and power lines during peak wind periods.
Commuters, students, and daytime workers should plan for blustery conditions throughout the day. Additional updates will be issued as winds diminish and the system exits the region.
