Binghamton, New York – Drivers across the Southern Tier and Northeast Pennsylvania should brace for slick and potentially dangerous roads tonight as rain quickly changes to snow, setting the stage for a hazardous Thursday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from Wednesday evening through early Thursday afternoon for much of the Southern Tier, including Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Tioga, Tompkins, Steuben, and Yates counties, along with Bradford and Susquehanna counties in Pennsylvania. Snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected, with localized higher totals possible where heavier snow bands develop overnight.

In Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, Cortland, Norwich, Owego, and surrounding communities, temperatures will fall below freezing this evening, allowing wet roads to turn icy quickly. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads are expected to become especially slick late tonight and early Thursday.

Snowfall rates could briefly intensify overnight, reducing visibility and making travel difficult during the Thursday morning commute. Officials warn that even short trips could become hazardous as conditions deteriorate.

Motorists are urged to slow down, leave extra following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel overnight and early Thursday. New York drivers can check road conditions by calling 511, while Pennsylvania travelers should monitor updates through 511PA. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall trends increase overnight.
