Binghamton, NY – A quick transition in weather is setting up across central New York as lake-effect showers diminish today before a stronger storm system brings rain and increasing winds Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, lake-effect rain and snow showers will taper off by late afternoon, allowing for a brief window of quiet, dry weather Friday night into early Saturday. Highs today will range from the upper 30s to mid-40s across the region.

Forecasters say a low-pressure system will then move in Saturday, pushing warmer air into the area and spreading rain through the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will climb into the upper 40s and low-to-mid 50s, marking one of the milder days in the forecast before a sharp drop arrives behind the system.

By Sunday, colder air will sweep across central and southern New York, changing lingering rain into lake-effect snow showers by the late afternoon. Highs will fall back into the 30s and low 40s. The National Weather Service notes that winds will strengthen Sunday morning into the afternoon, with sustained speeds of 15–20 mph and gusts reaching up to 30 mph.

While any snow on Sunday is expected to remain light, bursts of lake-enhanced snowfall could briefly reduce visibility, especially north and west of Binghamton and through higher elevations.

Travelers and weekend planners should expect a quick shift from mild, wet conditions Saturday to colder, windier weather Sunday. Light lake-effect snow will likely continue into Sunday evening before tapering off early Monday.
