Binghamton, New York – Strong winds and lake-effect snow are creating hazardous weather conditions across the Binghamton area Tuesday, prompting multiple alerts from the National Weather Service.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday for Broome County and surrounding areas. According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, west winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 56 mph. These winds may blow around unsecured objects, down tree limbs, and cause isolated power outages.

In addition to strong winds, localized heavy lake-effect snow showers are continuing through the morning hours. Visibility may drop to as low as one-quarter mile at times, particularly in heavier snow bands. The National Weather Service reports that localized snowfall accumulations of 2 to 3 inches are possible through 8 a.m. EST.

As of early Tuesday morning, conditions at Greater Binghamton Airport showed light snow and fog with a temperature of 16 degrees and wind chills near 5 degrees below zero. Gusty winds combined with cold temperatures are contributing to blowing snow and slippery road conditions.

Snow showers are expected to continue intermittently through Wednesday night. While most additional accumulations will be light, some areas could see brief bursts of snow reducing visibility during the morning and evening commute periods. Overnight lows are forecast to fall to around 13 degrees Wednesday night.

Travel may be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, due to strong crosswinds and rapidly changing road conditions. Commuters, students, and early-morning drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and use caution.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items and monitor NOAA Weather Radio or weather.gov for updates as conditions evolve throughout the day.
