Binghamton, New York – Arctic air remains firmly in place across central New York and the Southern Tier today, keeping temperatures well below average and setting the stage for additional snow later tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, daytime highs today are expected to remain in the teens, offering little relief from the prolonged cold pattern. Forecasters say below-average temperatures will continue through the rest of the week, reinforcing ongoing winter conditions across the region.

Light snow or flurries may move through parts of central New York around midday, particularly across the Southern Tier and areas south of the Thruway. While accumulations from this initial activity are expected to be minor, conditions will change later this evening as lake effect snow develops, primarily affecting locations north of Interstate 90 and west of Oneida Lake.

Communities including Syracuse, Auburn, Rome, Utica, Cortland, Norwich, and surrounding towns may see varying impacts depending on snow band placement. Travel corridors such as Interstate 81, Interstate 90, Interstate 86, U.S. Route 11, and the New York State Thruway could experience slick conditions, especially overnight and during early morning hours.

The National Weather Service notes that lake effect snow can be highly localized, leading to rapid changes in visibility and road conditions. Motorists traveling north of I-90 should be prepared for snow-covered roads and sudden reductions in visibility.

In addition to snow, persistent Arctic cold will keep wind chills low, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged outdoor exposure. Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit time outside, and ensure pets are kept warm.

Students, early-shift workers, and commuters traveling during nighttime or early morning hours may face the greatest impacts, particularly in lake-effect-prone areas.

Forecasters advise monitoring updated forecasts and lake effect snow statements as conditions evolve through tonight and the remainder of the week.
