Binghamton, New York – Up to 4 inches of lake effect snow could impact travel along I-81 and I-90 through Thursday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service in Binghamton, lake effect snow will continue through the day, with more moderate bands setting up across the Finger Lakes region. Snowfall totals of 1 to 4 inches are possible in the most persistent bands, while other areas may see up to 1 inch of additional accumulation.

Moderate snow is expected at times near Syracuse, Auburn, Cortland and portions of the higher terrain east of Cayuga Lake. Lighter accumulations are forecast farther south toward Elmira and the Twin Tiers.

Roadways including I-81 between Binghamton and Syracuse, I-90 (New York State Thruway), NY-13 near Ithaca and NY-17 in the Southern Tier may experience reduced visibility and snow-covered stretches, particularly during heavier bursts.

Forecasters say snow will begin tapering off by late afternoon or evening as high pressure builds in from the west. Lingering light snow showers may continue into the overnight hours before ending.

High temperatures Thursday are expected to remain in the 20s to near 30 degrees across much of central New York, keeping road surfaces cold enough for accumulation during heavier bands.

Drivers, including college students and commuters across the region, should allow extra time and remain alert for rapidly changing visibility in lake effect snow.
