Binghamton, New York – A fast-moving clipper system will bring 1 to 3 inches of snow across central New York late tonight into Wednesday morning, creating slick travel along I-81 and I-88.
According to the US National Weather Service in Binghamton, the steadiest snowfall is expected overnight, tapering between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday. While total accumulations are generally forecast between 1 and 3 inches, the timing could lead to a slow and slippery morning commute.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Northern Oneida County from 1 a.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday. That area could see 3 to 5 inches of snow through Wednesday night, particularly near and north of the I-90 corridor.
Lake-effect snow showers will continue at times today, with some embedded heavier bands. Snow intensity is expected to diminish briefly this afternoon before the clipper system arrives overnight.
Additional snow showers are forecast Wednesday afternoon and evening, along with the potential for isolated snow squalls as a cold front moves through. Lake-effect snow may become more concentrated near and north of I-90 late Wednesday night.
Travel impacts are possible along I-81 through Binghamton and Cortland, I-88 near Oneonta, and I-90 between Utica and Syracuse.
The system may especially affect students and early commuters during the Wednesday morning travel window.
Officials advise motorists to monitor updated forecasts and allow extra travel time during periods of snowfall.
