Binghamton, NY – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday for parts of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania, where up to 12 inches of snow could impact travel along Interstate 81 and NY-17.

According to the US National Weather Service in Binghamton, a developing nor’easter is expected to bring widespread accumulating snowfall Sunday into Monday morning. The watch includes Delaware and Sullivan counties in New York, along with Susquehanna, Wayne, Pike, Wyoming, Lackawanna, and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania.

Forecasters indicate the highest snowfall totals are likely across the Catskills into northeast Pennsylvania. Areas such as Monticello could see between 8 and 12 inches, while Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazleton may receive 4 to 8 inches. Snowfall totals are expected to decrease quickly west and north of the watch area.

Uncertainty remains regarding the exact storm track, and any shift could significantly affect final snow amounts. The region currently sits near the western edge of the projected snow shield.

Major roadways including I-81, I-80, I-476, and NY-17 may become snow-covered and slippery, particularly during peak accumulation Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. Reduced visibility is also possible during heavier snow bands.

Commuters, college students, and freight traffic moving through the I-81 corridor may experience delays during the Monday morning commute.

Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as snowfall projections may change with new data.
