Binghamton, New York – Steady snow will taper between 6 and 9 a.m. Wednesday after dropping 1 to 3 inches, creating a slippery morning commute across parts of central New York.

According to the US National Weather Service in Binghamton, the snowfall early Wednesday will leave untreated roads slick, especially along Interstate 81, Interstate 88 and surrounding secondary highways. Temperatures rising into the mid-30s to lower 40s later today are expected to help melt some accumulation, limiting additional daytime buildup.

Forecasters said additional snow showers are expected this afternoon and evening, with the potential for isolated snow squalls between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Brief bursts of heavier snow could quickly reduce visibility and create sudden hazardous driving conditions, particularly along the I-81 corridor from Binghamton to Syracuse.

Later tonight into Thursday morning, lake effect snow is forecast to redevelop, concentrating north and near the Interstate 90 corridor. Areas including Syracuse, Oswego, and Utica could see higher totals, with localized snowfall ranging from 3 to 6 inches in the most persistent bands.

Snowfall totals include both the morning system and the expected lake effect accumulation through early Thursday.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, especially during the early morning commute and again late this afternoon if squalls develop.

The changing conditions may affect students, delivery drivers and early commuters along major interstate routes.

Further updates will be issued as lake effect bands become more defined.
