Binghamton, NY – Drivers across the Southern Tier and nearby areas should prepare for dangerous travel conditions tonight as snow squalls move through the region, bringing brief but intense bursts of snow, gusty winds, and rapidly changing road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, an arctic front will sweep through the area this evening, increasing the risk for snow squalls between roughly 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. These squalls can cause sudden whiteout conditions, even where snowfall totals remain relatively modest.
Forecasters expect general snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches across much of Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania, including the Binghamton area. While amounts are limited, the intensity and timing of the snow may lead to icy or snow-covered roads, especially during heavier squalls.
The NWS warns that visibility may drop quickly to near zero at times, particularly as winds increase behind the arctic front. Temperatures will fall sharply tonight and remain cold into New Year’s Day, increasing the risk for flash-freezing on untreated roads.
In addition to tonight’s squalls, lake-effect snow showers are expected to develop north of I-90 from Thursday through Saturday, which could lead to additional localized accumulations and ongoing travel issues in favored snowbelt areas.
Officials urge motorists to slow down immediately if they encounter a snow squall, turn on headlights, and avoid sudden braking. If travel is not necessary overnight, residents are encouraged to delay trips until conditions improve.
Stay weather-aware this evening and overnight, as snow squalls can develop with little warning and create hazardous conditions in minutes.
