Binghamton, N.Y. – Mixed snow and light ice are creating slick road conditions across the Southern Tier and Northeast Pennsylvania through noon EST today, disrupting the morning commute on Interstate 81 and nearby state routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Madison and Tioga counties in New York, and Bradford, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Susquehanna and Wyoming counties in Pennsylvania. Additional snow accumulations up to 1 inch are possible, along with a light glaze of ice.
Bridges and untreated ramps are the biggest concern.
PennDOT reported reduced speeds along Interstate 476 and portions of Interstate 81 near Scranton and Wilkes-Barre late this morning. In New York, drivers along Interstate 86 and Route 17 near Owego and Waverly are encountering patchy slick spots. Binghamton Regional Airport reported minor de-icing delays.
Lower elevations and valley locations may see little accumulation, but elevated terrain could turn slippery quickly before midday.
What residents should do now: Slow down, allow extra braking distance, and check 511NY or 511PA for real-time road conditions before heading out.
Temperatures are expected to edge above freezing early this afternoon, improving travel conditions. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon EST today.
