Binghamton, NY – A developing lake effect snow event could bring more than 6 inches of accumulation to parts of Central New York from Monday night through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.

Forecasters say there is still some uncertainty about exactly where the heaviest snow bands will set up, but the highest probabilities for significant accumulation currently center around Syracuse, Oswego, Camden, and Richland, where chances range from 47% to over 70% for more than six inches of snow.

The NWS cautions that snow amounts could vary widely over short distances, depending on how the lake effect bands organize and move. Motorists should prepare for reduced visibility and difficult travel in the most persistent bands, particularly along I-81 and surrounding rural routes.

Snow showers are expected to develop late Monday evening and continue into Tuesday. The agency advises residents to monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve and to plan ahead for potentially hazardous travel early in the week.
