New York – Snowflakes drifted through low clouds this morning as roads turned slick across the Southern Tier, offering a sharp reminder that winter travel season has arrived. Tires hissed on slushy pavement near sunrise, and that sound may linger as snow and ice shape the days ahead.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through late afternoon, with total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches. A light glaze of ice is also possible, especially in higher elevations across Broome, Tioga, Chenango, and Cortland counties.

In Binghamton, Vestal, Endicott, and along Route 17 and I-81, snow mixes with mist at times, lowering visibility and slowing traffic. Crews have treated major roadways, but untreated side streets and bridges remain slippery. Drivers should reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance through the day.

Temperatures hover near freezing now, keeping snow slow to melt. Later this week, readings rise into the upper 30s and lower 40s by Christmas Day, offering brief relief. To be fair, that warmth comes with a tradeoff. Melting snow may refreeze quickly once colder air returns.

Meteorologists are tracking another system for Friday that could bring renewed snow and a rain-to-freeze transition. That setup raises concern for flash freezing during post-Christmas travel, especially early Friday and after sunset.

Plan extra time if heading out later this week. Keep winter gear in the car and check road conditions before leaving. Winter weather is setting the tone for late December travel. Seeing slick spots where you live? Share what conditions look like in your neighborhood.
