Binghamton, NY – Snow moving into the Southern Tier this afternoon is expected to create slippery road conditions and impact travel through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a fast-moving clipper system will bring scattered snow showers this afternoon, followed by a push of colder air tonight. As the system exits, lake-enhanced snow is expected to develop overnight into Thursday, particularly north of the city.
Forecasters say upslope flow and lake enhancement could result in 3 to 7 inches of snow in northern Oneida County, where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from this afternoon through Thursday afternoon. While totals in the Binghamton area are expected to be lower, periods of accumulating snow may still affect major roadways, especially during the Thursday morning commute.
Snowfall may be light to moderate at times, but colder temperatures will allow snow to accumulate quickly on untreated roads. Drivers should expect slick conditions on local streets, highways, and elevated surfaces, particularly overnight and early Thursday.
The National Weather Service also noted a dangerously cold Arctic air mass is expected to move into the region heading into the weekend, which could prompt additional cold weather advisories or warnings.
Looking ahead, confidence is increasing in a potential winter storm Sunday into Monday that could bring widespread accumulating snow. While confidence is high that a storm will develop, forecasters say snow amounts and the storm track remain uncertain and will be refined in the coming days.
Commuters, students, and overnight workers are urged to monitor updates and allow extra time for travel as conditions change.
