Binghamton, New York – A fast-moving clipper system will bring accumulating snow to Binghamton late tonight into Tuesday morning, with the most significant impacts occurring during the Tuesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, 2 to 5 inches of snow are expected across lower elevations, including the Binghamton area. Higher elevations across Central New York and northeast Pennsylvania could receive 3 to 6 inches, with the highest totals focused on hilltops and ridge lines.

Snow is expected to overspread the region after midnight, though light snow showers or flurries are possible earlier this evening. By Tuesday afternoon, warmer air moving in from the west will cause snow to transition to a wintry mix, and in some areas, freezing rain or plain rain.

Forecasters note a light glaze of ice is possible, particularly in higher elevations, as precipitation tapers off late Tuesday. Lingering lake-enhanced snow showers may persist into Tuesday night or early Wednesday, but additional accumulation is expected to be light.

The most affected period will be Tuesday morning, when snow-covered and slippery roads could slow travel across the Southern Tier, including Interstate 81 and surrounding secondary roads.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and use caution on untreated roads, bridges, and elevated surfaces.
