Binghamton, NY — The National Weather Service in Binghamton is tracking an Alberta clipper system moving across upstate New York this morning, bringing a mix of snow and rain that will impact travel across the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions through Thursday morning.

Snow began spreading into the region early Wednesday and will transition to a rain/snow mix in lower elevations by late morning as temperatures briefly rise above freezing. Most valleys will receive a trace to 2 inches of accumulation, while higher elevations could see 4 to 8 inches, particularly across Onondaga, Madison, and northern Cortland Counties, where a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for developing lake-effect snow late tonight into Friday morning.

“Morning travel will be slick, especially on untreated or secondary roads,” forecasters warned. “Visibility could be significantly reduced in bursts of heavier snow.”

As the clipper exits eastward tonight, colder air filters back in, allowing lake-effect snow to redevelop across central and northern New York. Winds from the southwest will limit heavier totals in the Twin Tiers but enhance snowfall near the Allegheny Plateau and Finger Lakes.

Thursday’s highs will hover in the low to mid-30s, with temperatures dropping into the 20s overnight. Travelers are advised to allow extra time for commuting and to monitor weather.gov/bgm or @NWSBinghamton for updates and potential advisories.

The National Weather Service urges residents to drive cautiously, maintain distance, and prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility throughout the day and into early Thursday.
