Binghamton, New York – Winter weather will return to the Binghamton area tonight through Tuesday night, with widespread snowfall and a brief wintry mix expected to impact travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, snow will move into the region tonight, following a quiet and seasonably cool day with highs mainly in the mid-30s. Forecast trends indicate 1 to 5 inches of snow are possible across much of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania by the time the system exits Tuesday night.
Snow is expected to continue into Tuesday morning, before warmer air works northward, allowing precipitation to change to a wintry mix of snow, freezing rain, and rain from late Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. The best chance for spotty freezing rain is across parts of northeast Pennsylvania and far southern New York.
Forecasters note that any freezing rain that develops should be brief, with ice accumulations limited to a trace to a few hundredths of an inch. Ice falling on top of existing snowpack should help limit overall impacts, though slick spots are still possible.
Snowfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are common around Binghamton, with locally higher amounts possible in surrounding higher terrain. Conditions improve later Tuesday night as precipitation tapers off.
The timing may affect holiday travelers, commuters, and students, particularly during Tuesday daytime travel.
Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions and allow extra time if traveling during periods of snow or mixed precipitation.
