Binghamton, N.Y. – Cold air settling into the Southern Tier and northeast Pennsylvania will trigger a frost advisory from 12 a.m. until 8 a.m. Thursday. Temperatures will dip into the mid-30s overnight, creating frost that could damage or kill sensitive plants left uncovered.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the advisory covers a wide stretch of central New York including Broome, Tioga, Chemung, Steuben, Tompkins, Cortland, Madison, Chenango, and Southern Oneida counties. In Pennsylvania, affected areas include Bradford, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming, and Pike counties. Cities and towns such as Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, Montrose, Towanda, and Monticello are included.
Gardeners, farmers, and homeowners are urged to protect tender crops and flowers by covering them or moving them indoors before midnight. Patchy frost may also reduce visibility in low-lying areas during the early commute Thursday.
The advisory is set to expire by 8 a.m., but additional cold nights are possible into the weekend, keeping the risk of frost in place for central New York and northeast Pennsylvania.
