Binghamton, New York – A fast-moving clipper system will bring light snow and possible snow squalls to the region late on New Year’s Eve, creating brief hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, light snow will spread west to east across much of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania late Wednesday afternoon and evening. Snow squalls are most likely between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. as a strong cold front moves through during New Year’s Eve night.

Forecast snowfall totals through early Thursday morning are generally 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts of 4 to 6 inches across northern Oneida County due to lake-effect snow. Elsewhere, accumulations are expected to remain light but could fall quickly during squalls.

Snow squalls may produce sudden reductions in visibility, gusty winds, and rapidly slick road conditions, even where snowfall totals are modest. Drivers traveling late tonight along Interstate 81, Interstate 88, Route 17 (Southern Tier Expressway), and Interstate 90 are urged to slow down and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

For New Year’s Day (Thursday), colder and breezy conditions are expected, with lake-effect snow redeveloping north of the I-90 corridor, especially across northern Oneida County. Temperatures will trend colder through the day.

The timing of this system may affect New Year’s Eve travelers, overnight workers, and early-morning commuters heading out after midnight.
