BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A broad winter storm is set to sweep across Central New York and Northeast Pennsylvania beginning late Monday night, bringing the first widespread heavy snowfall of the season. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of the region, including Binghamton, Oneonta, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Montrose, from late tonight through Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service, 6 to 8 inches of snow are possible across both states, with localized higher amounts likely in the higher terrain of the Catskills and Endless Mountains. Snow is expected to start after midnight and intensify toward the Tuesday morning commute, creating slick and snow-covered roads. Snowfall rates could exceed an inch per hour at times, significantly reducing visibility.
The storm is forecast to continue through the day Tuesday, tapering off by evening. Both the morning and evening commutes are expected to be hazardous, with icy conditions lingering into early Wednesday. Crews are urging drivers to allow extra travel time and avoid unnecessary trips.
Residents should prepare for potential power disruptions and delays as the system moves through. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued if snowfall totals trend higher.
