New York – Snow begins to thicken across the Southern Tier this morning, coating sidewalks, parking lots, and untreated roads as daylight builds. Light flakes turn steadier by late morning, and visibility drops quickly once heavier bands move in. Tires hiss on wet pavement now, but slush and packed snow will take over as temperatures hover near the mid-20s.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from early afternoon through midday Saturday. Broome, Chenango, Cortland, and Otsego counties can expect 5 to 9 inches of snow, with the heaviest accumulation arriving from mid-afternoon through the evening. Travel is expected to become difficult, especially during peak holiday return traffic.

In Binghamton, Vestal, Endicott, and along Route 17 and I-81, snow may fall heavily at times. Snow could briefly mix with sleet before tapering late tonight, then lingering into Saturday morning. Plows will be active, but secondary roads may remain snow-covered for hours. Allow extra braking distance and plan additional travel time if heading out today.

Temperatures rise slightly late this weekend, introducing rain chances Sunday into Monday. That warm-up increases the risk for flash freezing once colder air returns, especially overnight and early mornings. Wet pavement can refreeze fast, creating hidden black ice during New Year’s week travel.

Looking ahead to the final days of December and the start of 2026, periods of rain and snow remain possible, with temperatures flirting near freezing. Conditions may change quickly midweek as another system approaches near New Year’s Eve.
