A biting December chill has settled across the Southern Tier, and by Wednesday, it’s bringing another round of snow and slick travel from Binghamton northward. The morning air sits in the single digits — just 7°F early Tuesday — and meteorologists warn that the next system could pack a punch by midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, snow showers are expected to increase late Wednesday with a 100% chance of accumulation overnight. Light flakes may begin before sunset, turning heavier after dark as temperatures drop back into the lower 20s. Roads along I-81, Route 17, and Route 88 could quickly become snow-covered and icy through Thursday morning.
Winds shifting out of the southwest will make it feel even colder, with wind chills dipping into the single digits. By Thursday, highs will struggle to reach the low 30s, and lingering snow showers could reduce visibility for morning commuters. Residents should plan extra travel time, especially on bridges and rural routes prone to black ice.
By Friday, the clipper system moves east but leaves behind a lake-effect snow pattern — part of a broader setup expected to continue across the Great Lakes and Northeast from Dec. 11–17. Another surge of Arctic air is forecast to follow, keeping highs below freezing into the weekend.
Locals are encouraged to check heating systems, dress in layers, and stay alert for slippery roads.
