BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Thunderstorms and soaking showers are moving across New York from west to east today, bringing gusty winds, heavy rain, and a much-anticipated break from the heat by Thursday morning. Afternoon highs will reach the mid-to-upper 80s before cooler air arrives overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, storms will be most widespread between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., with rain chances topping 80% in cities such as Ithaca, Syracuse, and Binghamton. Some storms could produce localized flash flooding, especially where downpours linger.
Travelers along I-81 and I-88 may encounter reduced visibility and ponding on roads during the heaviest rain. The gustiest storms could bring winds capable of knocking down small branches, especially in the Southern Tier and Mohawk Valley. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, allow extra travel time, and avoid driving through flooded areas.
Cooler air will settle in tonight behind the passing cold front, with Thursday’s highs in the low to mid-80s under drier skies.
