Binghamton, NY – Snow is already falling across parts of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania Tuesday morning, with conditions expected to worsen later today as a wintry mix develops, raising concerns for slippery roads and hazardous travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, snow has begun mainly west of Interstate 81 and is slowly sliding east as the morning progresses. Some areas are seeing bands of moderate snow, while lighter snowfall continues elsewhere across the region.

Forecasters say the snow will persist into the late morning hours before transitioning to a wintry mix this afternoon, as warmer air moves in from the west. During this transition, there is a brief window for patchy freezing rain and drizzle, mainly from late morning through early afternoon. While ice accumulations are expected to be light, even a thin glaze on top of snow could significantly worsen driving conditions.

Snowfall totals through tonight generally range between 2 and 4 inches, with localized amounts of 3 to 5 inches possible, especially in higher elevations. Lower elevations, including parts of the Syracuse and Binghamton metro areas, are expected to remain on the lower end of accumulation.

The National Weather Service emphasized that the combination of snow, mixed precipitation, and fluctuating temperatures could lead to rapidly changing road conditions. Travel impacts are likely throughout the day, particularly for holiday travelers and commuters.

Drivers are urged to check the latest weather forecasts and road conditions before heading out, slow down, and allow extra travel time. Even after precipitation tapers off, slick spots may persist on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Road condition updates are available by dialing 511 in New York and Pennsylvania.
