Billings, Montana – Drivers across south-central Montana are facing hazardous travel conditions as powerful crosswinds batter the Billings area, making driving especially difficult on exposed highways. The strongest winds are expected to impact travel today and continue into Tuesday, creating dangerous conditions for high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, strong crosswinds will affect portions of Interstate 90 and Highway 191 along the western foothills. Wind gusts are forecast to reach 55 mph, with localized gusts as high as 65 mph possible near Livingston, Big Timber, and Nye. The most intense winds are expected from Monday evening through Tuesday morning, though gusty conditions may persist at other times.
I-90 west of Billings, particularly near Livingston and Big Timber, is most vulnerable due to open terrain and mountain gaps that funnel wind. Highway 191 south of Big Timber may also see sudden, forceful crosswinds capable of pushing vehicles out of their lanes. Officials warn that semis, campers, trailers, and other high-profile vehicles are at greatest risk and should consider delaying travel or using alternate routes.
Motorists are urged to reduce speed, keep both hands on the wheel, and remain alert for sudden gusts. Wind-related travel issues could continue into Tuesday afternoon before gradually easing. Additional advisories remain possible if winds strengthen or last longer than expected.
