Billings, MT – Dangerous winds are expected across south-central and southeast Montana and parts of north-central Wyoming on Wednesday, with forecasters warning of gusts strong enough to damage property and disrupt travel throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service Billings, powerful west to northwest winds will peak Wednesday afternoon and continue through tonight. Most areas in the region, including Billings, Hardin, Big Timber, Red Lodge, and Roundup, are expected to experience 60–80 mph wind gusts at times. Forecasters note there is a 1 in 10 chance of gusts reaching 75 mph or higher, especially along favored foothill corridors.
The extreme winds may create hazardous crosswinds for north–south roads, including portions of Interstate 90, U.S. 87, and U.S. 212. High-profile vehicles are at particular risk, and rollover incidents are possible. In past events of similar strength, strong gusts have overturned trucks and trailers along exposed stretches of highway.
Forecasters say visibility could briefly drop under isolated snow showers, though widespread snow is not expected. The larger concern is blowing debris, downed tree limbs, and scattered power outages as the strongest winds push through the region.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid parking under trees, and prepare for potential power interruptions. The Weather Service emphasizes that winds of this strength are uncommon and require extra caution.
Winds are expected to gradually diminish early Thursday, though elevated gusts may persist into the morning for some locations.
