Billings, MT – Big changes are on the way for Montana this weekend as the state shifts from unseasonably warm weather to a much cooler, wetter pattern, according to the National Weather Service in Billings.
Forecasters say Friday will be the last warm day before a dramatic temperature drop begins Saturday, October 4. By Sunday, highs across much of the region will be in the 40s and 50s. Along with the cooldown comes widespread rainfall across the plains, with most areas expected to receive between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain.
According to the NWS, the higher elevations will see the first significant mountain snowfall of the season, with snow levels dropping as low as 6,000 feet by Sunday. The greatest accumulations are expected above 8,000 feet, which could impact outdoor recreation and mountain travel.
In addition to rain and snow, forecasters warn of a high probability of frost or freezing conditions Sunday night and Monday night, especially in low-lying areas. Residents are urged to prepare for cold nights and take precautions to protect gardens, crops, and outdoor plumbing.
Travelers heading into the mountains should be alert for changing road conditions, while those in the plains should expect periods of heavy rain and reduced visibility through the weekend.
