Billings, MT – Warm, dry, and breezy weather will continue through the weekend, increasing grass fire concerns across south-central Montana.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, temperatures across the region are running well above normal for early February. Daytime highs through the weekend are expected to reach the 50s and 60s, with some locations potentially approaching 70 degrees by Thursday. The warmest conditions are anticipated near Billings, Hardin, Livingston, and communities along the I-90 corridor.
The combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, and periodic breezy winds is raising concern for elevated grass fire potential, especially near the western foothills. The National Weather Service urged residents to avoid activities that could spark fires, including outdoor burning and improper disposal of cigarettes.
Forecast data shows dry conditions dominating through Sunday, with little to no precipitation expected across much of the area. Communities such as Big Timber, Columbus, and Roundup are expected to remain dry, while breezy afternoons may further contribute to fire spread potential in open grassland areas.
Despite the warm and dry pattern, changes are expected early next week. Confidence is growing for cooler temperatures and increasing chances for precipitation by Monday or Tuesday. While details remain uncertain, the shift could bring more seasonable conditions back to the region.
Major roadways including I-90, U.S. Highway 87, and U.S. Highway 212 are not expected to see weather-related travel issues this week. However, reduced visibility could occur near any grass fires that develop, particularly during afternoon hours.
Commuters, students, and young workers spending time outdoors should remain aware of fire safety guidance and changing weather conditions during the late winter warm spell.
Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official National Weather Service updates as early next week’s pattern change becomes clearer.
