Billings, MT – Light snow overnight may create slick travel conditions on major roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a weak disturbance is expected to move across southeast Montana tonight through Friday morning, bringing periods of light snow to portions of the region. Snowfall amounts are forecast to remain on the light side, but even minor accumulations could impact early-morning travel.

Roadways most likely to see impacts include Interstate 90 near Billings and Livingston, Interstate 94 toward Miles City, and surrounding state highways. Forecasters noted that light snow is also possible over west-facing mountain slopes, where conditions may deteriorate more quickly overnight.

The National Weather Service cautioned that slick spots may develop on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, particularly late tonight into Thursday morning. Visibility may briefly decrease during snow showers, especially in open areas and higher elevations. Commuters traveling east Thursday morning are advised to allow extra time and remain alert for changing road conditions.

In addition to roadway impacts, officials highlighted difficult backcountry conditions, with light snow and winter terrain creating hazards for recreation and travel in mountainous areas. Valley locations, including Billings, are expected to see limited accumulation, but impacts could still be noticeable during peak travel periods.

Snow chances are expected to gradually taper off by Friday morning, with no significant storm system currently forecast. Temperatures are expected to remain seasonable for late January, limiting the potential for widespread heavy snow.

Drivers, early-shift workers, and students commuting along I-90 and I-94 are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road reports from the Montana Department of Transportation before heading out.
