Mild temperatures and breezy conditions will persist across the Billings area and south-central Montana as residents ring in the New Year tonight and head into New Year’s Day.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, temperatures this evening will remain well above seasonal averages, with readings generally in the 30s to lower 40s overnight. Breezy conditions are expected to continue, particularly across the western foothills and exposed areas.
Forecast data shows wind gusts tonight reaching 30 to 40 mph in communities such as Livingston, Harlowton, Big Timber, and along portions of the Interstate 90 corridor. Billings may see gusts in the 20 to 30 mph range through late evening and into early Thursday morning.
While no winter precipitation or hazardous weather is expected, the gusty winds may impact high-profile vehicles, especially along I-90 between Billings, Laurel, Big Timber, and Livingston. Motorists towing trailers or driving lightweight vehicles should use caution during overnight travel and early New Year’s Day.
New Year’s Eve celebrations should remain largely unaffected by weather conditions, though temperatures will fall into the 20s and lower 30s by midnight. Winds may make it feel cooler at times, particularly in open or elevated areas.
On New Year’s Day, mild conditions will continue with highs reaching the upper 30s to mid-40s across much of the region. Breezy winds are expected to persist, though gusts should gradually ease later in the day. Dry conditions are forecast to continue into the first days of 2026.
The National Weather Service advises residents to secure loose outdoor items and remain cautious while traveling in windy conditions. While this pattern is not considered dangerous, the persistent wind may create minor travel and outdoor inconveniences during holiday activities.
Overall, the weather is expected to cooperate for end-of-year travel and celebrations, with unseasonably mild temperatures providing a calm transition into the new year.
