Billings, Montana – Rain and wet snow are moving into the Billings area Tuesday morning, creating slushy travel conditions along Interstate 90 and nearby highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, lower elevations including Billings, Laurel, Columbus, and areas along I-90 can expect rain changing to wet snow between 7 and 9 a.m. Tuesday. While widespread heavy accumulation is not expected in town, some higher hills may see 1 to 2 inches of snow.

Specific higher terrain areas such as Arrow Creek Hill along I-90, Aberdeen Hill, the Wolf Mountains, and the Lame Deer Divide along Highway 212 could receive between 2 and 3 inches. Roads near the Beartooth-Absaroka foothills and along U.S. Highway 212 toward Red Lodge may experience heavier snowfall and reduced visibility.

Forecasters warn that wet snow may create slushy stretches, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and elevated roadways during the morning commute. Visibility could briefly drop in heavier bursts of snowfall.

In the Beartooth-Absaroka Mountains, heavier snow is expected, along with increasing avalanche danger in backcountry areas.

Drivers traveling between Billings and Livingston on I-90, or south toward Red Lodge via Highway 212, should allow extra travel time and watch for changing road conditions.

Students, early-shift workers, and commercial drivers may encounter the most impact during peak morning travel hours.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Tuesday as precipitation tapers, though higher elevations may retain snow cover longer.

Motorists are encouraged to check Montana road reports before traveling and use caution on untreated surfaces.
