Billings, Mont. – Gardeners and farmers across eastern Montana may need to cover sensitive plants Friday night as temperatures dip into the 30s, bringing a risk of frost in several areas. The National Weather Service warns that patchy frost is possible in sheltered valleys, with the greatest threat in Baker, Sheridan, and Miles City.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, Baker faces a 75% chance of frost and a 20% chance of a hard freeze by Saturday morning. Sheridan holds a 50% chance of frost, while Miles City carries about a 20% risk. Billings itself is less likely to see frost, with probabilities under 5%.

The coldest temperatures are expected in low-lying valleys, where clear skies and light winds could allow frost to settle. Outdoor vegetation, especially late-season gardens and sensitive crops, may be damaged if not protected.

Residents are advised to bring potted plants indoors and cover exposed vegetation. Livestock water sources should also be checked for freezing conditions in colder spots.

Cool nights will remain possible into early next week, but the most widespread frost threat appears limited to Friday night.
