Billings, Mont. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to develop across Montana this afternoon, with the highest risk stretching from Billings eastward. The National Weather Service warns storms could turn severe between 1 and 10 p.m. Saturday, bringing damaging winds and hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the main threats include wind gusts up to 65 mph and hail as large as quarters. Affected areas include Billings, Miles City, Broadus, Ekalaka, and Buffalo, where storms may intensify quickly through the evening.

Drivers along Interstate 94 and Highway 212 should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Heavy rain may also create localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas. Outdoor events and travel could be disrupted, with conditions shifting rapidly as storms move east after sunset.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, identify safe shelter locations, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Emergency officials recommend securing loose outdoor items and delaying non-essential travel during the strongest storms.

Scattered storms will taper off after midnight, but additional storm chances remain possible into early next week.
