BILLINGS, Mont. — Strong and potentially hazardous winds are expected to impact Billings and surrounding areas beginning Monday night and continuing into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say the strongest winds will affect the western foothills and nearby communities, where wind gusts could reach or exceed 60 miles per hour. The powerful winds are expected to create difficult travel conditions, particularly along major routes including Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 191.

The National Weather Service in Billings warned that high-profile vehicles such as semitrailers, recreational vehicles and pickups towing trailers could be especially vulnerable to strong crosswinds. Motorists are encouraged to know their vehicle limits, delay travel if possible, or consider alternate routes during the peak wind period.

In addition to travel impacts, residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items such as trash bins, holiday decorations and lightweight equipment that could be blown around or damaged by the strong gusts. Power interruptions are also possible if winds bring down tree limbs or power lines in exposed areas.

The wind event is being driven by a strong weather system moving across the region, producing a tight pressure gradient that will intensify winds overnight. Forecasters said the strongest gusts are expected late Monday night through Tuesday morning before gradually easing later Tuesday.

Officials emphasized that conditions can change quickly and encouraged residents to stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and weather alerts.
