Hilo, HI – Residents on the east side of the Big Island should limit outdoor activity overnight as volcanic ash from Kilauea continues to drift across communities through 6 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, an Ashfall Advisory remains in effect for Big Island East and Big Island Southeast. Kilauea is undergoing a minor eruption, producing limited ash accumulation of less than a quarter inch in affected areas.
Ashfall can reduce visibility on roadways and create slick surfaces, especially in areas near Puna and downwind of the volcano. Fine ash particles may irritate eyes and lungs, posing added risk for people with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Crops and livestock could also be impacted, and minor damage to equipment and infrastructure is possible where ash settles.
Residents are urged to remain indoors if possible, particularly those with breathing issues. Anyone outside should wear a mask or cover their nose and mouth with a cloth to limit inhalation. Drivers should slow down in areas of reduced visibility.
Conditions will be reassessed early Monday morning, and additional advisories may be issued if ash emissions continue.
