Big Bear Lake, California – Two rounds of heavy snow and powerful winds could slam the San Bernardino County Mountains starting Monday morning, creating dangerous travel through Thursday morning.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Monday morning through Thursday morning for Big Bear Lake, Big Bear City, Lake Arrowhead, Crestline, Running Springs and Wrightwood.

The first wave arrives Monday with significant accumulation expected. Between 6,000 and 7,000 feet, 4 to 9 inches are likely. Elevations from 7,000 to 8,000 feet could see 9 to 14 inches, with up to 20 inches above 8,000 feet. Snow levels will begin near 6,500 feet and fall toward 5,000 feet during the day.

According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, winds may gust 60 to 70 mph Monday, strongest along desert-facing slopes. Blowing snow could drop visibility below a quarter mile, especially near mountain passes and ridge tops.

Snow may ease or become lighter Tuesday before a second round of heavy snow and gusty winds returns Wednesday into early Thursday. Snow levels could drop even lower during the second surge, expanding impacts to more communities.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous. The Monday morning and evening commutes could be significantly impacted along Highways 18, 330 and 38. Strong winds may also down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages.

Residents and visitors should monitor updates closely, delay non-essential travel and ensure vehicles are equipped with chains and emergency supplies.
