Macon, Georgia – A driver was arrested after deputies found him asleep in a running vehicle on a Poplar Street median over the weekend.

According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, a H.E.A.T. Unit deputy was on patrol when he noticed a Ford Mustang stopped in the median against a tree with the engine still running. Deputies reported that the driver appeared unresponsive inside the vehicle.

Authorities said the deputy knocked on the window but was unable to wake the driver. Upon opening the vehicle door, the deputy was able to wake him and place the car into park before the driver allegedly fell back asleep.

The male driver was reportedly operating the vehicle without a valid license and with an expired license plate, according to the sheriff’s office. He was also arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

Officials did not release the driver’s name or age as of publication.

The arrest highlights ongoing DUI enforcement efforts in Bibb County. Law enforcement officials continue to urge motorists to avoid driving while impaired.

Poplar Street is a primary downtown corridor used by late-night drivers and shift workers, increasing potential safety risks when vehicles are left running in traffic areas.
