Moncks Corner, SC – A Goose Creek woman who allegedly served as a treasurer at a recovery home has been arrested following an embezzlement investigation involving forged checks, authorities said Thursday.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriffโs Office, the arrest was announced Thursday after detectives completed an investigation into alleged forgery and financial misconduct tied to the Oxford House in Goose Creek. Investigators said Brenda Carol Byrd, 63, was taken into custody and charged with breach of trust greater than $2,000 but less than $10,000 and forgery under $10,000.
Deputies reportedly responded on March 17 to the Oxford House after receiving complaints about missing checks and check stubs. During the investigation, officials alleged that Byrd, who was serving as treasurer at the time, had access to the checkbook, which was kept in a locked filing cabinet.
Detectives said they obtained copies of nine checks that were allegedly forged and made payable to Byrd. Authorities further alleged that Byrd negotiated and cashed the checks herself. The total amount allegedly taken from the Oxford House between February and March was reported to be $2,800.72.
Officials noted that Byrd was living at the Oxford House while participating in a recovery program. The Oxford House is described as a shared living environment where individuals in recovery support one another in maintaining sobriety.
As a result of the findings, investigators secured two felony warrants for breach of trust with fraudulent intent and forgery. Byrd was arrested and is expected to face the charges in court.
The Berkeley County Sheriffโs Office said it remains committed to investigating financial crimes and protecting residents and organizations from alleged fraud and embezzlement.
