Berkeley County, WV – A welfare check in Hedgesville turned into a tense standoff Tuesday afternoon when a man allegedly armed with a shotgun confronted Berkeley County deputies near the Morgan County line.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 12:17 p.m. on January 2, 2026, when dispatch received a call about a “crazy man” at a home on Snake Lane. Deputies responding to the scene were advised that the same individual had also called 911 from Morgan County, claiming to be armed.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered Ronald Dick, who reportedly exited the rear of the residence holding a shotgun and shouting profanities. According to the report, he ignored multiple commands to drop the weapon and told deputies to shoot him.

Deputy Baldridge ultimately deployed her Taser, immobilizing the suspect and allowing deputies to safely take him into custody without injury.

Authorities said Dick was taken to Eastern Regional Jail and charged with wanton endangerment involving a firearm, brandishing deadly weapons, assault on a law enforcement officer, and obstructing law enforcement. His bond was set at $30,000 cash only.

Sheriff Robert “Rob” Blair commended Deputies Baldridge and Clark for their restraint and professionalism during the high-risk incident, noting that their actions “reflect exemplary training and dedication to preserving life.”
