Moncks Corner, SC – A Tuesday traffic stop in Berkeley County led to the arrest of two men after deputies allegedly discovered methamphetamine and a firearm inside their vehicle.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a vehicle near I-26 and Jedburg Road on September 30 for defective equipment and an improper license plate. During the stop, passenger Tyberius Ra Deas allegedly fled on foot, while deputies made contact with driver Steven Bruce Benton. An open container of alcohol was also found inside the vehicle, officials said.
Deputies then conducted a probable cause search, locating a handgun and approximately 15.2 grams of methamphetamine, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Additional deputies and K-9 units joined the search for Deas, who was later located with help from a concerned citizen’s tip.
Both Benton and Deas were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Authorities said Deas also faces a charge of evading arrest and was found to have an outstanding warrant through Summerville Police.
Sheriff Duane Lewis emphasized the importance of traffic enforcement in uncovering illegal activity across Berkeley County.
