Corvallis, OR – Two mushroom hunters who went missing in Benton County during separate incidents this fall were both located safely, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).

Authorities said a 76-year-old woman became disoriented while foraging off Highway 34 near Alsea on October 9, 2025. Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers located her within hours, unharmed.

A second search was launched on November 3, 2025, after a 32-year-old man was reported missing near Woods Creek Road outside Philomath. Deputies said searchers spotted the word “HELP” spelled out with sticks on a logging road, leading them to the man’s location. He was also found safe and did not require medical attention.

According to BCSO, both rescues were successful thanks to the coordinated efforts of volunteer SAR teams. The department extended appreciation to the volunteers for their quick work and dedication, noting their teamwork “makes all the difference in moments like these.”

Officials reminded the public to stay prepared during mushroom hunting and hiking season by packing the “Ten Essentials,” including navigation tools, extra food and water, and proper clothing.
