Beekman, New York – A pedestrian was killed after being struck by an SUV on State Route 55, prompting a multi-hour roadway closure and an ongoing sheriff’s investigation.

According to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal car-pedestrian crash occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. Thursday on Route 55 near Gardner Hollow Road in the Town of Beekman.

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate that Marissa L. Burke, 39, of Beekman, was crossing Route 55 after exiting a Dutchess County LOOP bus when she was struck by a westbound 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Authorities stated that the bus was not involved in the collision.

Burke was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The operator and sole occupant of the Jeep was not injured, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The primary factor in the crash appears to be an alleged failure to yield on the part of the pedestrian, investigators said. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit are continuing to review the incident. The Beekman Fire Department assisted at the scene.

State Route 55 was closed for approximately three hours while authorities conducted the investigation, causing traffic delays for mid-day commuters in the area.

Officials have not released additional details, and the Sheriff’s Office said further information will be provided as it becomes available.
