Beaufort, North Carolina – High surf and storm surge are threatening communities along North Carolina’s Crystal Coast today, with 2–4 feet of flooding possible in surge-prone areas and wind gusts up to 45 mph hammering Beaufort, Harkers Island, and Cedar Island.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning remain in effect as of 10:58 a.m. Wednesday. The most hazardous conditions will continue through the afternoon, with storm surge impacts expected near beaches, marinas, and low-lying escape routes.

Winds of 25–35 mph, with gusts reaching 45 mph, have already downed trees and blown debris across several roadways. Some roads are impassable, especially near wooded areas and bridges. Scattered power and communication outages are also being reported.

Residents along the coast are urged to stay away from vulnerable areas, especially docks, boardwalks, and barrier islands. Beach erosion is likely, and some small craft have already broken from moorings. Emergency officials warn against unnecessary travel, especially on flooded roads.

This is not expected to be a rain-driven event, and tornado risk remains low. However, the greatest threat continues to be from life-threatening surge and coastal flooding.

Warnings remain in effect through tonight. Stay tuned for emergency updates and coastal advisories.
