Beatrice, Nebraska – Southeast Nebraska residents should brace for dangerous heat conditions Monday, with heat index values surging to 109°F by late afternoon in counties including Gage, Jefferson, Saline, and Pawnee.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until noon, followed by an Extreme Heat Warning from noon to 8 p.m. CDT Monday. The warning covers both sides of the Iowa-Nebraska border, including Shelby County in Iowa.

Cities like Beatrice, Crete, Fairbury, and Harlan are at high risk for heat-related illnesses, especially during peak afternoon hours. Residents are strongly urged to stay indoors, use air conditioning when possible, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity between noon and 8 p.m.

Drivers should never leave children or pets in parked cars, even briefly, as interiors can reach deadly temperatures within minutes. Those without reliable cooling should call 211 to locate the nearest cooling shelter.

Monday’s heat event could rival similar July surges from recent years, stressing both personal health and the power grid. Relief is expected Tuesday, but more heat could return later in the week.
