San Francisco Bay Area / Monterey, CA – The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for the Central and Northern California coastline, in effect from 3 AM Friday through 3 AM Monday.
A moderate to long-period northwesterly swell will bring breaking waves of 15 to 20 feet along with strong rip currents and a heightened risk of sneaker waves — larger, unexpected waves that can surge much farther up the beach than normal.
Beachgoers are urged to stay well back from the surf zone, avoid rocks and jetties, and never turn their back on the ocean. Hazardous swimming and surf conditions are expected throughout the weekend.
These large waves will affect Pacific Coast beaches from Sonoma County south through Monterey Bay, posing dangers even for experienced swimmers and surfers.
