Bar Harbor, Maine – Warm air temperatures in the 70s and 80s are expected to draw crowds to Maine’s coastline Friday, but state officials are warning beachgoers and boaters not to be fooled — the ocean remains dangerously cold. Water temperatures in the mid-50s could trigger hypothermia within minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Coastal Hancock and Washington Counties from Friday morning through Friday evening. The advisory highlights increased risks for swimmers, kayakers, and paddleboarders in areas from Bar Harbor to Machias.

Local emergency crews are urging extra caution, especially for those using paddlecraft. “Always wear a life jacket, and check wind and tide conditions before heading out,” the alert advises. Even experienced swimmers are at risk of muscle cramps and disorientation in cold water.

Conditions are expected to ease by Friday night, but further alerts may follow if temperatures remain low. Visitors should monitor local updates and avoid extended time in open water.
